BDE: Hagaon R’ Moishe Chaim Shmerler, who served as the av beis din of the ‘Machzikay Hadas community in Zurich Switzerland for many years, passed away this morning (Tuesday) in Yerushalayim at the age of 89.

Hagaon R’ Moishe Chaim Zt”L was born in Veinna Austria in 1927, to his father Hagaon R’ Naftali Tzvi Shmerler zt”l, also known as R’ Hershale.

R’ Hershale served as Dayan and Posek in Galicia and then in Yerushalayim, and was also the rosh yeshivah of yeshivas ‘Chayey Olam’ in Yerushalayim. He passed away in 1948.

In Ellul of 1939, R ‘Moishe Chaim arrived in Israel together with his father and settled in Tel Aviv. R’ Moishe learned in the ‘Chayey Olam’ yeshiva together with the ‘Pnei Menachem’ of Ger, who was also learning there at the time.
Sixty years ago, R’ Moishe Chaim arrived in Zurich Switzerland where he accepted the post of, av beis din of the ‘Machzikay Hadas’ community, and proudly led the community for many years.

A few years ago, he returned to Israel where he has been ever since. This morning he passed away in the Hadassah ‘Har Hatzofim’ hospital in Yerushalayim at the age of 89.

The famous Chossid and photographer, R’ Baruch Oyvitz who was close to the Rav zt”l, shared with “Bechadrei Chareidim” that R’ Shmerler zt”l was a humble Jew, and his whole life was one Masechta of Torah and Yiras Shomayim. His congregants loved him, and got from him Torah and Chassidus.

The Rav zt”l leaves behind a ‘Dor yeshorim um’evorach’ many sons, sons in law, and dozens of grandchildren who are going in his ways.

Last year on ‘Zos’ Chanukah, his son R’ Naftali Tzvi Hershler was appointed in his place as the av beis din of the ‘Machzikay Hadas’ community in Zurich Switzerland.
The levaya will leave from his house on rechov Sorotzkin today at 4:15 in the afternoon, and from the ‘Kochav Yackov’ (Tshibeen) yeshiva at 5:00 PM where it will make its way to har hamenuchos where he will be buried.
