President Trump’s historic visit to the Kosel today was a powerful slap to the face of the Reform and ‘women of the wall’ movements. Aside from the political and strategic significance of the visit, the visit touched upon a very contested aspect of the Kosel, when Trumps wife Melania, and his daughter Ivanka, parted from him and headed for the women’s section of the Kosel.
In response, MK Yackov Asher said: “How frustrating it is, when the president of the United States and his wife honor the accepted customs of the holy place for the Jews, while the reformers and their aides viciously trample these customs. Meaning the high court judges”.
‘Liba’, an Israeli organization which is involved in battling the reform initiative to change the status at the Kosel, also commented on Trump’s family behavior at the Kosel: “The president's conduct represents how to honor and behave in a holy place, in the spirit of the Jewish tradition for thousands of years. We hope that the marginal elements that are constantly trying to change the Jewish customs and harm the sanctity of the Western Wall and Jewish unity, will learn from the conduct of the president of the United States”.
The organization also put out a statement countering the belief that the reform movement is a corner stone in the positive US-Israel relations. “We were shown today again, that the relationship between Israel and the Unites states is not in the merit of the reform movement, rather despite it”.
President Trump and his family respecting the Jewish tradition at the Kosel today, debunks the claims made by fringe groups that if the long-standing tradition of a mechitzah at the Kosel is not revoked, it will harm the good relations between Israel and the United states.
Trumps behavior at the Kosel today clearly shows that the reform organizations in the Unites States do not wield much influence over what happens at the Kosel.
The Chareidi and Dati parties are currently leading a struggle against a new reform initiative to take control of the Kosel and change the long-standing tradition practiced there; according to classical halacha.
