The saga over the opening of stores in Tel Aviv on Shabbos widened today, with remarks made by minister of finance Moshe Kachlon who said he would oppose the bill suggested by the Chareidi MK’s to bypass the high court’s ruling.
As was previously reported, “Bechadrei Chareidim” exposed last week that the Chareidi MK’s put forth a bill that would bypass the high court’s ruling -that stores may stay open on Shabbos in Tel Aviv- and would forbid stores all over the country including in Tel Aviv to remain open on Shabbos.
“There will be no ruling that bypasses” said Kachlon speaking to the ‘Kalkalist’. “Not in the Shabbos law, and not in any other law. Regarding Shabbos, I am pro keeping the status-quoe.
Kachlon explained that he opposes the law since it harms the authority of the high court. “I condemn every effort to harm the court, and I will stand like a wall against these attempts…I will not lend a hand to any law that bypasses the high court. Just like there was no harm done to the committee that appoints judges, and like there was no harm done to the ‘senior method’”.
Kachlon continued that, “If someone has criticism over this ruling, that is his right. I don’t either like all the rulings, but I honor them. As a society, we don’t have the privilege not to honor the high court’s rulings- if we wish to uphold a healthy and normal society”.
As was previously reported, the Chareidi MK’s have introduced a bill that will forbid the opening the of stores on Shabbos, and will also apply retroactively to include Tel Aviv, which currently permits it’s stores to remain open, per the ruling of the high court.
Kachlon’s remarks coupled with the recent remarks of minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked to ‘Aruts 2’, that during last week’s meeting between the party leaders, almost all of them agreed that there is nothing to be done over Tel Aviv; poses a great challenge for the Chareidi MK’s to pass the Shabbos law.
