Mk Moshe Gafne responded to remarks made by minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked, who said that the Shabbos law will not include Tel Aviv.
Gafne contrasted her and said: “We are talking about Tel Aviv and not just the rest of the county. That was agreed upon at the meeting with the party leaders, and that is also stated in the law we proposed”.
As was previously reported in “Bechadrei Chareidim” despite the Chareidi parties clearly stating that they have no intention on backing down, and they plan on passing legislation that will bypass the ruling of the high court which permits supermarkets to remain open on Shabbos. Minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked claims that the coalition agreement applies only to other cities and not to Tel Aviv.
Speaking to Israel’s channel 2 TV (Aruts 2), Shaked said: “There was a meeting between the party leaders last Sunday, we were all there, almost all of us agreed that there is nothing to do about Tel Aviv, since the high court already ruled over the matter. The question was what to do over the rest of the cities in the country. This question was also posed by Minister Aryeh Deri, what can be done regarding the rest of the cities around the country.
Shaked went on to describe a solution put forth by Minister Deri: “Minister Deri suggested to amend the ordinance of municipalities, and place it as it was before 1988, in which every local law regarding Shabbos needed the approval of the minister of interior. This will solve the problem in other cities. I think this is a reasonable solution, I do not see why the coalition will not go along with it.”
Shaked was also asked if PM Netanyahu won’t be concerned to go along with such a solution since it can provoke a massive anti Chareidi backlash from Lapid: “I haven’t seen Yair Lapid come out against the Chareidim in the past year” she responded, “it almost doesn’t exist. The PM highly admires his current coalition, and as long as “Not normal” things are not done, he will support whatever the coalition jointly decides on”.
