Storm over chillul Shabbos: Leaders of the Chareidi parties met with Minister of religious affairs Yariv Levine yesterday, and explained to him the Chareidi and Dati position over the controversial ruling of the high court which allows local municipalities to officially permit stores to remain open on Shabbos.
Minister of interior Ayeh Deri(Shas), Health Minister Yaakov Litzman (Aguda), and chairman of the finance committee Moshe Gafne(UTJ), were all present at the meeting with Levine yesterday. The party leaders unanimously demanded that the law be instituted which would thereby remove the power from municipalities do render such sensitive decisions, and would instead place it with the minister of interior.
The aim of the law is to bypass the high court’s ruling that the Tel Aviv municipality has the right to allow its stores to remain open on Shabbos.
Following the meeting, MK Moshe Gafne held an exclusive interview with “Bechadri Chareidim” where he laid out the Chareidi position on this painful topic.
Gafne states that if the law won’t pass- there won’t be a coalition. However, Gafne is optimistic about the outcome, and assumes that the coalition will accept the demand “since they know they can’t play around with us on this topic”.
You finished meeting with Minister Yariv Levine, is there a solution already?
“We are without a solution.
In spite of the high court’s decision, there is no running away from a legislative solution which would protect the status-quote. If there won’t be such a solution I don’t see any partnership. In the past two years, I have voted for things that I don’t believe in, and things that I have no interest in. So too, my friends should do- because we are partners and we are part of the coalition. Everyone has his things, we have the things of Am Yisroel. Without this, the state of Israel does not have any existence.
If chalila there will not be shmiras Shabboss here, there will not be a state”.
Gafne added that, “there is also the social-democratic issue of not harming people that are working- (people)who own supermarkets and grocery stores in Tel Aviv. These store owners won’t be able to compete because they keep Shabbos.
Such a thing can’t be”.
Gafne also sharply criticized the judges of the high court saying, “The judges of the high court rendered a decision based on technical claims- I know them, their(judges) level is not so high. At the moment, the solution is to enact legislation”.
Do you believe that the coalition will give in to the demands?
“This is everyone’s law” replied Gafne with a wink. “Like in all the laws, my assistants do a very fast job- according to my instructions. When everything is ready they have all the Chareidi and Dati MK’s sign”.
