MK Yackov Asher (UTJ) introduced a revolutionary bill yesterday (Tuesday) that would give Yeshiva Bochurim status as “students”, and would open the door for various student discounts. If the bill passes, it will save hundreds of thousand of NIS to yeshiva bochurim who commute daily in public transportation.
Currently, Yeshiva bochurim do not have the status of a “student” and are therefore obligated to pay the standard transportation fare.
MK’s Moshe Gafne and Uri Maklev also joined along in supporting the bill; which calls for equality between Yeshiva bochurim and students of secular education in regards to subsidies in public transportation. The bill calls for all students learning in “a post high school institution, whether professional, technical, Toranit or religious” to receive a 33% subsidy on public transportations fares.
MK Yackov Asher, who introduced the bill tells “Bechadrei Charedim” that “the bill is meant to stop many years of ongoing discrimination against yeshiva bochurim. We are creating a balance and equality among students. There is no reason that students of secular education are getting subsidizations while yeshiva bochurim are not”.
