Baruch Dayan Ha’emes: Hagaon R’ Refael Nosson Tsvi Shulman ZT”L one of Slabodka’s Roshei Yeshivah and former talmid of the Chazon Ish passed away this Shabbos morning in ‘Mayeneie Hayeshua’ hospital located in Bnei Brak. The Rosh Yeshiva was 86.

The Rosh Yeshiva was not feeling well Shabbos morning and was thereby rushed to the hospital for medical treatment. As it became apparent that the end was near, congregants from the hospitals local shul ‘Adas Yisroel’ came to be with the Rosh yeshiva at his last moments, saying with him the psukim of Viduy.

R’ Nosson Tsvi Z’’L was born in Kobne Lithuania in 1930 to his father Hagaon R’ Mordechai Shulman Z’’L and his Mother Rebetsen Miriam A’’H daughter of R’ Izack Sher Z’’L founder of Slobadke Yeshiva in Bnei Brak.

The Rosh Yeshiva was named after his legendary grandfather R’ Nosson Tzvi Finkel Z’’L the Alter of slabodka. Not being able to flee Europe, the Rosh yeshiva spent the duration of the holocaust in the Kobne Ghetto.

Upon arriving in Erets Yisroel, he learned in the Slobadke yeshiva until his wedding to the daughter of Hagoan R’ Yechiel Michel Shleyzinger Z’’L Rosh yeshivas Kol Torah. The wedding took place on Rosh Chodesh Cheshvon with the participating of the Chazon Ish who was also the couples shaddchen. The Chazon Ish passed away a mere two weeks after the wedding.

After his father’s passing in 1981, the Rosh Yeshiva was appointed to be one of Slabodke’s Roshe Yeshivos in Bnei Brak. In 1988, he left Slabodke, first to open a Yeshivah in Yerushalayim, then moving to Strasbourg France, where he joined yeshivas Chachmei Tsorfat headed by Hagaon R’ Eliyahu Abital, where he spent the next thirty years engrossed in learning.

His Talmidim recall his wisdom and brilliance in learning combined with his sensitivity as a magnet for the many Talmidim who came to learn by him.

The Rosh Yeshivah leaves behind him a large family of children and grandchildren many of whom are great Roshei Yeshivos and Roshei Kollelim.

The levaya took place today (Sunday) in the Slabodke yeshiva in Bnei Brak, it then headed to Har Hamenuchos in Yerushalayim where the Rosh Yeshiva was laid to rest.
