Shimon Peres, Israel's former president, has been put into an induced coma by doctors after suffering a stroke.

The 93-year-old senior politician was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday. Israeli TV stations later said Peres was suffering brain bleeding and described the stroke as severe.

"Shimon, we love you and the whole nation is wishing for your recovery," PM Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement.

Peres had a political career crossing nearly seven decades, serving in cabinets and twice as a Labour Party prime minister. Peres was then president of Israel from 2007-2014. Peres shared a Nobel Peace Prize with Israel's late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
