A 17-year-old yeshiva bochur- the son of a Jewish mother and non-Jewish father, originally a resident of Belgium- will be forced to leave his Haredi life in Israel and live with his biological non-Jewish father who lives in Belgium, as reported by the Belgian Jewish newspaper “Regards”.
The saga began 8 years ago when the boy, Solal Georis, then 7 years old, was kidnapped by his mother in midst of a divorce from his non-Jewish father. The mother smuggled her child into Israeland there raized him in a Haredi family not revealing her childs location
The father, Vincent Georis- a well-known journalist in Belgium, did not give up and turned to the courts. He presented documents that prove that the child is meant to be in his hands.
Georis located the mother, Ronnit Bitton, in Israel and demanded to see his son. Bitton claimed she didn’t know the whereabouts of her son and at some point even claimed that the he is the one who kidnapped the child and that she hasn’t seen him already for 5 years.
Georis turned to a court in Belgium where at a court case lacking the presence of the defendant Ronnit was accused of slander and she was fined. At the same time, he turned to the court in Israel and claimed that because he is not a Jew and does not live in Israel the police do not take the kidnapping seriously. Georis even hired private detectives to find the boy, and the courts sentences the mother, Ronnit, to 5 years of prison sentence for kidnapping.
A month ago the mother signed a plea bargain, under which she will be freed on the condition she reveals her son’s location and that he be given over to his non-Jewish father. Georis on his part agreed to discard the prosecution against the family and other elements who brought up the child in hiding.
The boy, now 17 years old, presented himself at the police station, and turned himself in, holding in his hand documents that prove that he is really the kidnapped son. Belgian newspapers report that he presented himself in Haredi attire, looking fully like any yeshiva bochur. He is expected to meet with his father and move with him in Belgium.
Nonetheless, as the boy has grown and become an adult there is a possibility that he will decide on his own to return to Israel to his Haredi lifestyle.
