Yesterday, 23 of Av, was Yahrtzeit of David Gordon A"h.
This seems to be another picture of fallen IDF soldier after a tough battle with the enemy, but in this case of David Gordon his battle is even more difficult and the enemy is violent and extremely destructive.
David Gordon ended his life, after years of severe struggle with the consequences of the trauma he sustained from the abuse of his teachers in Talmud Torah in Detroit. Davids' friends and acquaintances describe him as a guy with quality. He didn't tell anyone about his deep pain, and for years he remained silent.
After a while, David finally got the courage.
David begins to share his experience with teachers and Rabbis of his community in order to receive support and with the hope that the community would stop his abusers from harming other children. David didn't receive support but instead was treated with denial and silence at best and contempt at worst .
Days pass and David could not bear the silence any longer. He begins to write a blog about his traumatic childhood experiences to raise awareness about similar cases. He further asked that all those who went through the same experience file a complaint. "It is better to blush for a few seconds than to let yourself bleed a lifetime," he wrote.
David survived the difficult battle against the enemy in Gaza but did not survive the battle against the silent and deadly killer inside.
The battle of trauma has caused great suffering and has take lives of many victims. Many survivors who are struggling weaken with every passing day.
Dear survivors, break the silence.
Being abused is not your fault, do not you deal with the consequences of the trauma alone. Turn for help and do not take your secret with you to the grave.
We, as a community, must hold the responsibility to give these survivors the utmost respect, never hurt them more. we need to help wounded souls to recover .
Silence destroys victims and speaking up is inevitable.
