A month after Rabbi Berland's extradition from South Africa to Israel, the Jerusalem Magistrate court extends the arrest of Rabbi Eliezer Berland, "Shuvu Banim" community leader. His lawyers intend to appeal.
After a long and protracted saga of court hearings, which lasted mostly until the indictment against Rabbi, his detention was extended until the end of proceedings, in part because of difficulty to trust him with the proposed detention alternatives.
The probation report delivered last week stated that he is a danger and an extreme flight risk. Berland's influence on his community is high enough to meet his needs. Therefore, the Probation Service recommended, as in previous hearings, to prolonged his arrest.
As stated, today, Judge Joya Skappa Shapiro in Jerusalem Magistrate's Court extended his detention until the end of proceedings
Rabbi Berland's daughter spoke to Probation Service and Israel Prison Service asking for her father to be released to house arrest.
She wrote a letter saying: "I'v came to testify in my own free will out of a genuine desire to expose the true character of my father. Despite the difficulty to communicate his greatness I'll try to put my thoughts into a few words."
Following the report filed last week in court, the daughter noted that "egoism and self-care are characters far removed from my father. Anyone who knows him can testify about it. We've never seen him as a forceful or imposing"
She ends off: "Abba always educated us to maintain the law. He taught us that state laws are essentially laws of the Torah too. Always guided us to obey the law at all costs. We'll accept any conditions".
