A tempest: in the middle of the storm around nullification of the Core Curriculum Law, Hagaon Rav David Yosef, member of the Council of Torah Sages and author of “Halacha Berura” says that it is his goal to add more core curriculum to the Shas educational institutions which he heads.
Harav David Yosef, who serves as the president of the Shas Educational Network told Avishai Ben Chaim, Channel 10’s commentator on charedi issues that, “I aim to add more core curriculum to the Shas system and raise its level even more. My father, too [HaRav Ovadia Yosef] was also in favor of this.”
It should be noted that currently, a great majority of Shas institutions do use the core curriculum. In an interview this week on Channel 2, Shas chairman MK Aryeh Deri was asked why he opposes the Core Curriculum Law. He answered that, “There was a Council of Torah Sages decision, and the core curriculum is taught in our schools.”
Deri related to Degel Hatorah’s opposition to core curriculum studies, saying, “I respect Degel Hatorah. They have closed communities that do not wish to teach the core curriculum, and I won’t go into their considerations. Each person has his own rabbi.”
