The Knesset Labor and Welfare Committee chaired by MK Eli Alalouf met Tuesday and unanimously approved a bill called the Sarona Bill submitted by MK Yigal Gueta. According to the bill, employers or owners of commercial areas cannot force businesses or service providers to work on Shabbos against their will. Neither can they demand compensation if they do not operate on Shabbos nor can they cancel any contract that has been signed among the parties.

MK Gueta opened the Committee’s deliberation by saying, “In the wake of a case that I heard about an employer in the Sarona complex who was forced to operate his business on Shabbos because the owner required him to do so, although he wasn’t motivated by for religious reasons: he just wanted to spend Shabbos with his family.”

MK Gueta praised the chairman of the Committee: “It’s wonderful to see how the Committee works in this room with such a positive attitude and with such understanding, and we thank the person who led this so well through the Committee, MK Eli Alalouf.”
