Mexico: Philanthropist Marcus Katz z"l passed away

Mordechai Dovid (Marcus) Katz passed on this morning in California. He was a pillar of the Mexico's Jewish community and a great supporter of the State of Israel.
He became very week as of recently and yet continued his daily activities. This morning he passed away suddenly with his family saying the vidui along with him.

Katz was born in Poland in 1917 and survived the Holocaust. He made his way on his own Eretz Yisrael where he was reunited with his parents. Together they moved to Mexico where Marcus went into business and became very wealthy.

He was involved in the manufacture of plastics and maintained close relations with Israeli leaders. He gave them both advice as well as financial assistance. He helped establish industry in Israel as well.

Marcus Katz established the Katz prize in memory of his mother. The Katz prize was a cash gift awarded to Rabanim who found Halachik solutions to the advancement of technology such as Harav Neurwith and others from Machon Zomet.

Marcus was a descendant of the Devrei Chaim of Sanz who donated millions of dollars to the Bobov Chassidus. Just this year he donated $6 million dollars for the construction of the Bnos Zion school in Boro Park.

In the past few months he worked with Shomo Kook to write his autobiography which includes rare accounts of the early years of the State of Israel as well as his conversations with Gedolei Yisrael and Israeli politicians.
