The state of emergency will allow the president and cabinet to bypass parliament in order to draft new laws and suspend rights.
50,000 people have been arrested or fired during the days following the coup. Over 600 schools were closed and thousands of state workers, teachers and professors fired.
After declaring the state of emergency the president and his cabinet will be able to enforce curfews, restrict freedom of assembly and freedom of speech. They will also have greater powers of arrest.
There is great concern about the consolidation of power being played out in the wake of the failed coup.
Turkey is also demanding that the U.S. extradite Fethullah Gulen, and is threating that America will be sorry if they do not comply with his demand.
