Two Soldiers Killed in Explosion in Hermon

The driver of an armored vehicle carrying Combat Engineering personnel exited the vehicle with a grenade in hand. The grenade exploded killing the driver, 24 year old Husam Tafash of Beit Jann and 20 year old Sgt. Shlomo Rindenow a lone solider from the Unites States.

The driver was a reservist from the Druse village of Beit Jann in Northern Israel, who pulled over near the Majdal checkpoint, about a meter away from a concrete wall. The driver then exited the car holding a grenade and walked around the front of the vehicle. The lone driver was stanidnf between the jeep and the concrete wall, and when the commander of the vehicle opened his door the grenade exploded, killing the driver, the lone soldier, and seriously injuring the commander. Two more soldiers were lightly wounded by shrapnel.

An army spokesperson called the tragedy, "a grave and difficult incident."

Combat soldiers who take part in clearing of border roads are armed with grenades, but drivers of military vehicles are not. "We have to understand why he [the driver] exited the vehicle holding the grenade. This will be determined by the committee of experts."
