Turkish military made a statement that they took over the country and imposed military rule close to midnight Friday. About half an hour later Turkish President Recep Erdogan asked the Turkish people to take to the streets to reclaim Turkey from the military.

Just a few hours later President Erdogan lands in Istanbul, returning form a holiday abroad. The moment he touched base it was clear the government was regaining control and had the support of senior military officials. He announces that the government is in control of Turkey and that the coup failed.

Soldiers surrender in the morning.

The coup has been called amateurish and had no political or public backing. The plotters behind the coup were only a faction within the army and were not representative of the majority of the military.

161 people died in the attempted coup and another 1,440 were wounded.

2,839 military personnel were detained in a crackdown on coup plotters.

2,745 judges are being dismissed across Turkey for alleged ties to Erdogan's rival Fethullah Gulen who is currently living in exile in Pennsylvania.
