In a Knesset plenum session on Wednesday, Chairman of the United Torah Judaism faction MK Eliezer Moses discussed Bechadrey’s expose concerning building for charedim, publicized Wednesday morning.
The Ministry of Housing and the Treasury are proposing 5000 housing units will be built each year for the charedi public.
The apartments will be built in new cities or in new neighborhoods in existing cities. According to the announcement, the plan is meant to address the problem of a lack of some 200,000 apartments for the charedi sector for the coming 20 years.
“I would like to discuss what I read in Bechardey Charedim,” MK Lazer said,” concerning the charedi public. The Ministry of Housing has decided to advance the construction of 5,000 housing units for the charedi public. Yes, I am happy about this, but I have to ask what will happen before this happens? What will the charedi sector do until then? It is in desperate straits for housing.
“A wonderful decision has been made but it will take years. MK Moses noted that an agreement in currently in the offing between the Treasury and the Ramat Hasharon Municipality wherein 40,000 housing units will be built at a cost of four billion shekalim. “Ramat Hasharon is near Bnei Brak and borders its Northern neighborhoods. It has an infrastructure that is suitable for the charedi public. Why shouldn’t they have a portion of this agreement? And it’s the same in Beer Sheva: 8,000 units, and 7,000 in Herzlia. The charedi public is left out of all of these projects. The Treasurer has to pick up the reins of these agreements and use them. He must delay signing them until the agreements offer a solution to the charedi population.”
