In a meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu, the chief rabbis and the heads of Shas and United Torah Judaism informed him of their demand to prevent any government recognition of reform Judaism.
The chief rabbis, the Rishon LeZion Rav Yitzchak Yosef and Rav David Lau together with the heads of Shas and United Torah Judaism, Minister of the Interior Aryeh Deri, Minister of Health Yaakov Litzman and head of the Finance Committee Moshe Gafni met with the prime minister along with Cabinet Secretary Avichai Mandelblit.
The chief rabbis clarified their position against granting any foothold whatsoever to the reform movement, especially at the Kotel as the place of sanctity for Jews throughout the generations.
The heads of Shas and United Torah Judaism announced that they will oppose any compromise that would grant recognition to the reform and are staunch in their belief not to grant them any sort of recognition or backing.
The rabbis reiterated the decision by the Council of Torah Sages and stated that charedi Judaism will never allow reform and conservative Jews to take away from the sanctity of Judaism in any way whatsoever.
At the end of the discussion, Prime Minister Netanyahu announced that he will continue his attempts at dialogue between the two sides with the goal of finding a possible solution in light of the judicial challenge of several petitions to the High Court and that he would keep the rabbis informed of any judicial steps taken.
