Notwithstanding the Opposition, Cabinet Approves Deal with Turkey
In spite of reservations, the Cabinet approved the agreement with Turkey by a wide majority: only three objectors – Bennett, Shaked and Lieberman

On Wednesday morning the Political-Security Cabinet met to deliberate on the agreement signed between Israel and Turkey, because of the opposition of the Bayit Yehudi ministers Naftali Bennet and Ayalah Shaked.
Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu brought the agreement to the Cabinet after the Director of the Foreign Ministry and his Turkish counterpart signed the agreement to which Bennet, Shaked and Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman opposed, with the agreement passing 7 to 3.
In addition, the Cabinet will soon deliberate on the conditions of imprisonment for Hamas prisoners in Israel as long as the question of the return of the bodies of soldiers Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin z”l and Israeli citizens Avra Mongisto and Hisham el Sayid who are being held in Gaza.
The Cabinet also decided to appoint a crew of ministers from the Cabinet to take care of and follow up on the subject of captives and missing persons, including creating leverage with Hamas. The Cabinet also decided that it will soon hold a discussion concerning the recommendations of the Shamgar Commission on Israel’s policy on captive and missing persons.
The prime minister and ministers thanked Dr. Yosef Chachnover, Mossad Head Yossi Cohen, Acting Head of the National Security Council Yaacov Nagel, Dr. Galit Rejwan from the Ministry of Justice and all others involved in the negotiations with Turkey.
According to Bennet, “Peace with Turkey is currently important for the State of Israel’s interests. However, the payment of compensation for terrorist activity is a dangerous precedent that the State of Israel will regret.”
Bennet added, “As long as Turkey has power over Hamas, they had better do everything in its power to see that Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin z”l come back to Israel.”
