High Court Kashrus Call

In the wake of the High Court’s decision against “private kashrus supervision,” the “Alternative Secular Kashrus” organization as well as the private charedi kashrus organizations are going to hurt: restaurants and stores that will now have to have kashrus certification from both the local rabbinate and the Aida or other body. This is because the rabbinate has started to enforce existing law.

According to law – even before this latest decision - every business must have a hechsher from the local rabbinate, even though it also has a hechsher from the Aida Hacharedis. However, with mutual understanding, this law was rarely enforced.

The Rabbinate says, “Every business that holds an alternative hechsher but not one from the local rabbinate will be fined. We are issuing warnings to this effect.”
CEO of the Aida Charedis kashrus committee, Rav Gavriel Papenheim said, “We’re not surprised. Every business that has an Aida Charedis hechsher also needs one of the local rabbinate, according to law. We are also notifying the businesses of this requirement.”

A person high-up in the Chief Rabbinate noted that, “The Israel Chief Rabbinate will continue to issue fines to any business that holds an alternate kashrut certificate without one of the local rabbinate. The law is clear that the rabbinate and only the rabbinate is the owner’s prerogative, but that’s all.”
