Facebook will be making changes that will diminish the traffic of publishers that rely heavily on them.

Facebook to Change News Feed

Facebook has spent years getting publishers to depend on them to expand their audiences. Now they are changing their tune.

Facebook announced Wednesday that they plan to make a number of changes to their news feed algorithm so that it will give content posted by users friends and family preferential treatment.

The content posted by publishers will be displayed less prominently in news feeds, which then bring a lot less traffic to the hundreds of news media sites that rely of Facebook.

The changes will affect everything posted by publishers including links, videos, live videos and photos. Facebook said that there will be an expected drop in reach and referral traffic for publishers who garner most of their audience via content posted on the publisher's Facebook page.

It will have less impact on a publisher's traffic if most of their traffic is being generated by users sharing and commenting on a publisher's stories and videos.
Facebook's decision brings home the point that publishers do not have direct access to their online audiences on social paltforms
