Shaked: Were we to accept the Charedi Imperatives—We’d already have the appointments
Within the parliamentary framework of, “unprepared questions,” MK Yehuda Glick of the Likud surprised Justice Minister Shaked, questioning one of most sensitive topics in the Coalition that has been brought several times to the High Court: Appointment of permanent judges to the Chief Rabbinical Court
Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked answered a question by MK Yehuda Glick of the Likud according to a new framework set in the Knesset protocol at the end of its winter session.
MK Glick brought up the topic of the coming meeting of the committee to appointment judges; the fact that the committee has not made the necessary appointments due to a lack of agreement between its members.
MK Glick said, “This is an inconceivable reality of giving in to directives by the charedi parties and their public representatives. You have the power to form a majority in the committee in favor of appointment of judges even in the lower levels, however you choose to take a passive position against Shas, who has vetoed the appointment of candidates who they feel are too forthcoming to women, G-d forbid.”
Justice Minister replied, “Had we accepted the charedi party directives we could have chosen the judges already. The fact that we have not done so and the fact that the meetings have been cancelled is clear evidence that we have not done so.
“And I say here to the members of the committee for the appointment of judges whether the chief rabbis or for anyone else who is listening among the committee members, if we don’t meet and choose the judges before the middle of July, the chief rabbinical court will effectively be closed.”
