After a month of break-ins and robberies of apartments in the Geula neighborhood, the police has arrested one suspect.
"Over the course of the last month there were more than 10 robberies in Geula,"says the community policeman Alon Cohen. According to Alon there have been more break-ins but not all of them have been reported.
The gang of thieves has a simple tactic. They generally work in pairs. One enters the building while his partner maintains a look out outside. The thief tries the doors on the entrance floor or the floor above, looking for a door that was left unlocked. When he finds an unlocked door he walks in and searches for cash, silver and jewelry. If he finds someone in the house he "innocently" asks them if they were expecting a vegetable order, and then leaves. If no one's home he walks off with the loot.
Last week they entered a home in the neighborhood and stole a lap top belonging to a family of a very sick little girl. The girl's entire medical history was stored in that computer. Her parents were distraught over the loss which cannot be measured in financial terms.
In wake of the rash of robberies Alon Cohen turned to city council member Moshe cohen and had him begin handing up signs in the building entrances in order to raise awareness. "Many people leave their doors un locked and keys under the mat or in the electric box of mail box. Thieves are already familiar with all these hiding places.
Yesterday at around 5:30 Mr. Cohen was in a neighborhood makolet when two young Arabs walked in. He recognized one of them from security camera footage he had seen in the police station and immediately called the police. One of the suspects was arrested while the other managed to get away. Additional arrests are expected soon.
