Up until now, Israeli Consulates throughout the world certified “student status” to any young person coming to study in Israel’s universities but refused to grant such status to yeshivah students, causing many thousands of young men having to claim tourist status upon their arrival and then later having to deal with the local offices of the Population Registry. This involved considerable trouble, long lines and time taken away from their Torah studies. Student status is vital to ensure their legal right to stay in the country as well as to receive budgeting.

Minister Deri decided to deal with this issue in order to stop the discrimination against yeshivah students who can now appear at Consulate offices with their letters of acceptance to a yeshivah in Israel and receive student status before leaving their home countries.

Minister Deri is glad of the new decision: “Equalization of the status of fulltime yeshivah students is of course a value in of its own. The situation wherein a yeshivah student from abroad has a lesser status that his peers coming to university is untenable. This new change is the right thing to do for the thousands of yeshivah students and will save them considerable Torah learning time, especially this coming Elul.”
