Synagogue Returned to Community after 92 Years
Brodsky Synagogue in Odessa returned to Jewish community. The rabbi of the community gave the key to the children of the Mishpacha orphanage, noting, “They are the key to the continuation of Jewish tradition in Odessa.”

Two hours before Shabbos candle lighting on the 11th of Sivan, the Shomrei Shabbos Chabad synagogue of 21 Osipova Street had a joyous atmosphere as the Jewish community participated in the symbolic acceptance of the key to the Brodsky Synagogue.
The synagogue was built in 1863 and is one of the most beautiful buildings in Odessa. It was taken out of Jewish hands in 1924 when it was transformed into the “Rosa Luxemburg Workers Club”, as recorded in YIVO archives, which was a meeting place to push socialist propaganda. The Ten Commandments over the synagogue's alter were covered with a photo of Vladimir Lenin. It later was used as an office for government archives. The local Jewish community tried for years to regain possession, and it was granted by the local authorities at the beginning of 2016.
