High Court Judge: Without the Olam Hatorah- we wouldn't be here

Supreme Court Justice Neal Handel attended a Shabaton for charedi lawyers this past Shabbos at the Kinar hotel in Northern Israel. During the course of the Shabbos he made some rather surprising remarks.

"In this country we are so busy looking at what the charedim are not doing that the time has come for us to pay attention to what they are doing. And they are doing a lot. In my opinion without the Torah World we wouldn't be here at all. We wouldn't have survived our long history of tragedy and wars without the continuity of a father passing down the Torah to his son. No off us would have survived without the simple fact that there were always Jews who did nothing other than learn Torah. "

In reference to the Core Studies Law the judge said," The most important thing to charedim is education. There is nothing at all that is more important to them than chinuch. How could anyone have conceived of the idea that we should teach the charedim what to teach their children?"

Chairman of the Finance Committee Moshe Gafni said ," the Supreme court has categorically ruled against charedim and religion. Accept for the recent ruling over the topic of the Rabanut Hechsher they have ruled against us. Supreme court judges are not politicians –they do not need to be reelected- they are appointed for life. Generally speaking they their own personal agenda and generally belong on a specific side of the map. :

Gafni added that he find a lot of benefit to these gathering of religious lawyers and judges. Lawyers have a responsibility to pass on the message of the importance of Torah learning and religion to the continuation of the Jewish Nation- specifically in the judicial arena."

It is a fact that each time the budget for yeshivos is cut Israel's economy doesn't do well- and the invers is also true. The budget of the yeshivos goes up, unemployment goes down, tax revenues go up and the economy improves."

The Shabbaton was organized by the chairman of the office of lawyers Effy Nave, in conjunction with the heads of charedi faction in the office of lawyers; Attorney Yosef Weitzman, Attorney Menachem Moshkovitz and Attorney Shlomo Lintzer.
