Orlando Rabbi: We could have been the Targets

The Jewish community of Orlando was just a short distance away from the scene of the deadly terror attack. Though they heard the commotion, the sirens and shooting, the Jews didn't know what had happened until the morning when the police came to comb their shul for additional terrorists.

Rabbi Yosef Konikov, director of Chabad of South Orlando spoke with Bechadrey Charedim after the three day Yom Tov came to an end.

"The massacre happened near our community. We heard a lot of sirens and shooting during the night but we didn't know what was going on until the morning. Then we found out.

Police men and soldiers appeared in our shul during shacharis, among them were those who had previously served in the IDF. They combed the shul and the surrounding area to make sure that there wasn't another terrorist hiding.

We are very concerned and frightened. What happened at the club would have happened in our shul. It was a miracle that it didn't. We are just a small Jewish community in the environs of a large Islamic community. That crazy man could have entered our shul. It is a nes he didn’t.

We are still waiting to hear if any Jews were injured in the attack who would need our help. As of now we have not heard of any."
