Litzmann and Yishai explain: Why we went with Rivlin?
30-year friendship with Yishai, fairness and honesty with Litzmann, Haredi MKs who read the map at the beginning of the race - explain
- Yehuda Halevi, Behadrey Haredim
- י"ג סיון התשע"ד
Moments after the victory, everyone is rushing to declare and congratulate the winner - President Elect Reuven Rivlin.
Inside the haredi factions opinions differed as to whom one should support for the role, but in the second round most likely the majority of Haredi MKs supported, when Torah Judaism did so entirely, as well as most of Shas MKs, possibly all of them.
MK Yaakov Litzmann, the first United Torah Judaism MK who declared his commitment and intentions to vote for Rivlin, says to Behadrey HAredim: "The role of the president rightly belonged to Ruvy. This is a proper and important choice. Though symbolic and not actually operational - but Ruvy will know to do a job which others have not done before him."
According to Litzmann, "We have a close friendship, and over the years Rivlin has dealt decently with issues related to religion and tradition in Israel."
MK Eli Yishai tells of his closeness with Rivlin and recalls the words of Harav Ovadia zt"l after the previous race.
"I know Ruvie since he was a councilor 30 years ago in the Jerusalem Municipality. We were together in the first Sharon government and we have been friends for the past thirty years.
"After the previous elections in which it was decided to vote for Peres, Rivlin said that if this decision of Maran zt"l, then he accepts it. Maran was moved and said he deserves to win next time and he actually won it. I wish him well in the role, he should merit mending the rifts in the nation, and be a loyal servant to the people of Israel in Israel and abroad."
Interior Minister Gideon Sa'ar, who led the campaign in favor of Rivlin, complimented the Haredim and bothered to emphasize that without them Rivlin would not have won.
