Following a long and tedious election process, MK Reuven Rivlin was elected today (Tuesday) for the presidency, having received 63 votes in the second round, and beat the rival Meir Shitrit who received only 53 votes. 3 additional notes were white.
First response in a message from Rivlin to Behadrey Haredim: "I congratulate and thank the members of the Knesset who voted for me and saw me as a symbol of unity of the people and traditions of Israel. Those are the values I grew up on, and in my role as President I will do my utmost to bring about a rapprochement and unity. As Israel's president I will establish a special team and act to connect the parts of the nation. "
This followed an unprecedented steeplechase, filled with embarrassing reports and police investigations that led to their retirement of two of the candidates, and elected the 10th president of the State of Israel.
At the beginning of the race ran Reuven Rivlin, Dalia Dorner, Dan Shechtman, Meir Shitrit and Dalia Itzik, but the first ballot took Reuven Rivlin with 44 votes and Meir Shitrit with 31 votes. Dalia Itzik settled on 28 votes, Dorner received 13 and Shechtman received single vote.
