Tense 'Jerusalem Day' in capital: stone throwing at Temple Mount

This morning (Wednesday) during the opening of the Temple Mount to visitors - a little before 8:00 am, a number of masked Arab youths began throwing stones at police forces. The police burst into the mountain and pushed the rioters. The masked men barricaded themselves inside the Al Aqsa Mosque, threw rocks and shot fireworks at the police force standing in front of them in the square outside. A policeman was lightly injured.

However, visits to the Mount continued as usual, but some visitors toured in a brief course as a result. During the visits a number of Arab worshipers called out slogans at visitors, those were repelled by the police force. After assessing the state by District Commander Yossi Parienti at 9:30am, the Temple Mount was closed to visitors. Until that time about 1000 tourists and 250 Jews visited the Temple Mount

At around 11:30, two young Jews were attacked on Haguy Street in the Old City by young Arab who slathered them with tear gas and fled. The two were injured and required medical treatment. After searching, the David District police located and arrested suspects carrying tear gas. The suspects were taken for investigation to David District police station.

About two hours later, at about 13:30, a young Arab man was attacked by two Jews in Jerusalem at Schem Road and was slightly injured. He said it happened after a heated argument between him and the attackers who started pushing and beating him. He was taken to Shaare Zedek Hospital for further treatment and police are performing searches for detecting the attackers.

At the Damascus Gate some 100 Arab youths clashed with a group of Jews who were there. When they did not obey police orders to disperse, they were dispersed using riot control measures. Three suspects were arrested.

At the Damascus Gate square about 30 Arab women gathered and shouted at groups of Jews there. The women were distanced.

On Sultan Suleiman Street, dozens of young Arabs attacked police and threw stones at them. Police forces dispersed them. One policeman was hit by a stone in his elbow. Three suspects were arrested.
