About two thousand Jews live in Djerba. A month ago another stabbing incident occurred when a Muslim stabbed a Jewish resident of the place, and the police claimed that the incident was an attack on a nationalist background.
Just a week ago there was a big Hilula in Djerba synagogue to Djerba held annually on Lag B'Omer attended by about one thousand five hundred Jewish guests from all over the world including Israel.
Government has set this year tight security around the synagogue because of the tension that prevailed among the opposition against the government's approval of Israeli passport holders to participate in the event. The opposition claimed that the certificate constitutes acceptance of normalization between the two countries. Recently Foreign Ministry warned Israeli's of visiting in Tunis for fear of terrorist attacks.
