In the weekly talk given by Hagaon Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch, Rosh Av Beis Din of the Eida Hareidis to his listeners, Harav Sternbuch addressed the reason that the haredi public stays aloof and even fights trends in the religious - national public.
The Rab"d began his talk with verses from the beginning of the Parsha and noted that "if the father does not obey the Torah and Mitzvot properly, then he will fail to educate his children properly, for the main education depends on personal example. The boys see how the father behaves at home and it is absorbed in their minds, what is the appropriate way and it affects them a lot more than what the father speaks with them and reproves them.
"And this is the main and fundamental war of the secular with us in our times, who seek to uproot us from the path of our ancestors. Therefore they tried hard to instill in us that the father is an old man and old fashioned, and does not understand anything, while they are innovative, modern and this is a generation of real turmoil.
"The way to keep the children strong in Yiddishkeit is to educate in an extreme way i.e. to educate them in a way which is reserved and differentiated from the secular and raise them in a way that every aspect of their lives will be guarded and radically different than the secular and then they will be completely disconnected from the wicked.
Here the Rab"d explained the reason for segregation from the "Mizrahi".
"The Chazon Ish zt"l said to a certain rabbi who complained why they fight against the people of the Mizrahi, for they keep the elementary Torah foundations like observant Jews, they put on tefillin and eat only kosher foods and why you should pick a fight with them so much? And the Hazon Ish answered: The Mizrahi's view is against extremists, they say it interferes with peaceful means, etc., and the truth is the contrary, it is precisely the extreme that is the guardian and saves from compromises. If we follow the path of the Mizrahi, then the secular will rule over us and will make us abandon religion and that is why we are fighting the Mizrahi.
"For indeed it is true that not all Jews can be 'extreme', but certainly those who fight against the extremists cause a great destruction of Judaism."
