Fear of water pollution in Jerusalem neighborhoods of Baka, Abu Tor, Talpiot, Zur Baher, Silwan, Ras al-Amud, Old City, Mamilla and Morasha. It is estimated there are approximately 130,000 people living in these neighborhoods.
Last night a number of complaints were received at the Gihon center about an unconventional taste and smell of water supplied to the residents. Immediately upon receiving the complaints, teams from the Gihon were sent for a check up, including making multiple samplings of water quality. Upon receipt of the sampling results which indicated a decrease in chlorine, concern was raised that the incident is of drinking water contamination. Preliminary tests found that there was a leakage of wastewater which are purified at a high level, into drinking water.
As soon as the fault was detected, it was immediately and treated intensively and an operations room in the center of the waters of Gihon in Bayit Vegan was established, which was directed by the CEO of Gihon, attended by corporate professionals, representatives of the Jerusalem Municipality and the Ministry of Health. Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat and the Gihon new chairman Avi Balshanikov also came to participate in the evaluation of the situation in the operations room.
Ministry of Health warns that the water should not be used for drinking, brushing teeth and treating food without undergoing boiling for 2 minutes until further notice. Gihon Corporation and the Ministry of Health are performing tests to ensure the safety of the water. Notices will be delivered to the public later accordingly.
CEO Zohar Yinon said that "The Gihon is running this event in coordination with the Water Authority, the Jerusalem Municipality and the Ministry of Health in order to restore life to normal as soon as possible. Immediately after the event we will announce it in an orderly manner in coordination with the Health Ministry and the Jerusalem municipality."
