Gafni to Bibi: "Litzman was right we must not believe you"

Particularly painful speech delivered by MK Moshe Gafni today (Wednesday ) in the plenum, on the occasion of the convening of a special session attended by Prime Minister - after 40 signatures of Knesset members from the opposition were collected demanding his presence, he told of the historic link between the haredim and Benjamin Netanyahu.



"In the year 1996 you ran for your first tenure, Rabbi Schach was already very old and along with the other great men of Israel decided to support you. During your second tenure in 2009 we supported you and in the last election we also supported you. I want to tell you, I never said this - senior journalists of told me they attacked the haredi public only because they support you. Same goes for the legal system which is a leftist. But that did not deter us from continuing to support you. If it were not for the Haredim, Netanyahu would not have been prime minister in Israel", Gafni called with pathos.

Gafni went on to discuss relations with between Netanyahu and the ultra-Orthodox delegates during the last term, and argued that despite sitting in the opposition he has avoided attacking Netanyahu. "You Prime Minister promised that there will not be criminal sanctions for yeshiva students. So even though we in the opposition we refrained from attacking you for months. I had a hard time with Litzman on this matter. He claimed not to believe you. Now I know he was right. Mr. Prime Minister, "Gafni ended with a harsh attack, "In your term Torah scholars in Israel were declared as criminals. What will your parent's say, what will your grandparents say? It's like Rome. Torah scholars will be announced as criminals".

Also Shas leader Aryeh Deri attacked the Prime Minister at the convened hearing: "Two of the greatest achievements of Menachem Begin were his connection between the ultra-Orthodox and Israeli society and concern for the poor. Government under your leadership last year managed to delete all the achievements of Menachem Begin.

"Every week government council scholars sit and think how to hurt Haredim, and make them feel apart from the Israeli society. We have not recovered from criminal sanctions, and we wake up yesterday with the title Haredim and Arabs do not get like all the rest. Lucky it includes the Arabs so the High Court will not rule against us and it will not pass the Supreme Court.

"The government under your leadership took the two most precious communities of the Likud, the ultra-Orthodox and the disadvantaged and disengaged them. You are distancing us and you do not want us, so our mission is to overthrow the government. There are people in government who care about nothing but hatred and incitement and polarization among the people."

Deri spoke of law of conversion: "religious judges and rabbis are doing extraordinary efforts to give approval for conversions in the army, and you are going to undo it because of political deals and laws of last week. You'll cause there to be parish registers. Greatest achievement of the government is polarized, which seems as defiance and a sense of very large public which are not welcome as citizens."
