Amazement: FBI pursue Satmar Rebbe

Satmar Hasidim are bewildered: the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation wishes to summon the Satmar Rebbe for investigation.

On Friday FBI agents raided the Beis Midrash Sighet in Williamsburg in the midst of shachris, searching for the "Grand Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum", in their words – the Satmar Rebbe, whose apartment is in the same building.

The Rebbe was at that time in Kiryat Yoel and not at the place.

As it turns out, the Rebbe is under investigation due to a complaint filed against him on suspicion of bribery during the election campaign in the primaries for a congressional seat of Area 12. The Satmar community of Mahar"a backed Nadia Willeskose and the other faction of Satmar supported another candidate and suffered defeat.

The Satmar community raised thousands of voters, and among other things, organized an amusement park for children, parents could bring their children to play, deposit them with volunteers, go vote and come back and take their children.

Various factors have complained that this is election bribery contrary to law. As part of investigating the matter, FBI agents came to interrogate the Rebbe as head of the community. Heads of Satmar have hired senior lawyers who are working to close the Rebbe's case.
