Referendum bill approved • Netanyahu: historic decision

The Knesset plenum approved tonight (Wednesday) second and third reading of the bill - Basic referendum, in the absence of the opposition.

The bill is a government proposal that merged with a private bill submitted by MKs Yariv Levin ( Likud Beiteinu) , Ayelet Shaked and Orit Struck ( Jewish Home ) and enshrines in law the obligation to hold a referendum on the agreement which delivered sovereign territory of Israel , after the agreement won the approval of the Knesset majority vote .

In the case where the agreement will usually of at least 80 members of the Knesset, a referendum is not required, as stipulated already in the law. The Basic Law is armored and modification will require a majority of Knesset members.

68 MKs supported the law without dissent and without abstentions.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in the Knesset, "I support this bill and want to pass it for the simple reason that a decision in such an arrangement must be received by the people.
