A 17 years old mother and six months old baby, cult members of Lev Tahor, who escaped a week ago, were arrested yesterday (Sunday) at the airport in Calgary.
Calgary Police confirmed that police officers assisted police seniors from Chatham - Kent to arrest the mother and the baby, who arrived at the airport at around three in the afternoon. Social services arrested the mother and the baby and they were put on a plane back to Toronto.
In Toronto the baby was taken to a foster family, and the mother was released.
As recalled, on Wednesday evening Behadrey Haredim reported of nine members of the Lev Tahor cult who fled to Guatemala, and were stopped at the Trinidad and Tobago airports when they asked to buy a ticket. Airport authorities told media that the group was acting strangely, and was suspicious. After the arrest, members of the group were housed at the airport hotel under police guard until contact was made with Canadian authorities, who demanded their extradition.
Border police tried to put the group members, including three adults and six children - on a flight back to Canada, but they hired a lawyer and refused to board the plane. However, the border police arrived on Saturday at the hotel where the group stayed, and forced them to get on a van that took them to the airport. At six in the evening, before the end of Shabbos, the group members were on the plane which returned them to Canada.
At the airport, the welfare authorities were waiting for the group, and took the children from their families to foster homes.
Last Thursday, a Canadian judge ordered to remove 14 children from their parents, who are members of Lev Tahor. On Thursday Ontario's child protection service held a hearing, in which it decided to demand the transfer of all 127 children of the group to foster homes, as reported by Postmedia news site.
