Secularists refuse to enlist: support Haredim

This morning Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, received a letter signed by 50 secular youth from across the country, in which they declare their intention to refuse to join the army.

In their announcement they refer to the Haredi enlistment law and say: "At a time when the political system is engaged in an effort to expand conscription for all populations in the country, against their will, young people from across the country get up and shirk from taking part in a circle of killing and violence in solidarity with Orthodox youth."

"We call out to all Israeli youth to examine the significance of military service. According to our view, the protection of our society does not mean the occupation and oppression, discrimination, racism and violence. We believe in the power of citizenship to change our reality, and turn it into a just, free and fairer. "
In the objective letter 2014, " they write:
"We citizens of the State of Israel intended for enlistment. We turn to the readers of this letter to set aside the obvious, and reconsider the meaning of military service.
We signatory intend to refuse to enlist, and the main reason is our opposition to Israeli occupation by the army. Occupied Palestinians living under Israeli government, even though they did not choose it and cannot legally affect its decision-making. This situation is not equitable and not right. "

They write that "the problem in the military permeates daily life in Israel is shaping education in schools, labor market opportunities , and causes of racism and violence in society and discrimination of ethnic , national and gender ."
"We refuse to give up our principles and our values as a condition for integration into society. Refusal is the result of profound thought and we are at peace with our choice."

"We call to our age group, the soldier in the regular and reserve, and all citizens of the State of Israel to reconsider their position about occupation, enlistment and the role of the military in society. We believe in the power and in the ability of citizens to change the existing reality, and create a fair and just society, and our refusal is an expression of this belief."
