Suspected gas attack in Jerusalem: 3 buildings evacuated

Severe gas event in Jerusalem following the terrorist action in main gas pipeline, a serious leak was detected in three buildings on Rovovic and Ben Yosef streets in East Talpiot .

In the afternoon a call was received in the operations room of firefighting and rescue following the smell of acrid gas on Shlomo Ben- Yosef Street in East Talpiot in Jerusalem, firefighters went out to the scene. When crews arrived at the scene they noticed that these are gas pipes inside the buildings, which were cut by deliberate sabotage in several places.

A few minutes later another call was received from Alexander Rovovic street nearby, following the smell of strong gas, other teams were called to the scene and in addition, a vehicle of identification and monitoring of hazardous materials and identified that on this street also, two buildings were cut off from the gas pipelines, in addition placed two ignition sources (lamp and papers on fire) in an attempt to cause an explosion.

Checking with gas detectors were measured at the site high gas concentrations which are within the volatility ( the amount of gas that caused the gas explosion in Gilo and even more ) fire fighters while taking a great personal risk entered the buildings and evacuated about 50 residents, closed the gas leaks and aired the buildings from the gas.

Yossi Partush commander who was the first at the event told: we arrived we noticed a very serious gas leak which was an immediate danger to buildings and citizens, we went immediately into action closed the gas leak evacuated the residents and prevented at the last minute a gas explosion that could occur in place as a result of acts of sabotage carried out within the gas pipes.

Thanks to the rapid reaction accompanied by taking great personal risk and divine favor avoided disaster proportions.

Later the gas technician also came.

Yoram Levy, Firefighting and Rescue Commission, said: "This is a serious incident that could have ended in disaster, we are examining a suspected nationalist event."
