Controversy in Shaked Committee on question of economic sanctions

Controversy in Shaked Committee on question of economic sanctions

At the meeting which ended today (Tuesday) afternoon at the Shaked Committee, committee members voted on a section which dealt with the extension of service for women. Committee members stated that as of today there will be no extension of women's service, and to the extent that DM will want to bring about an extension of service for reasons of military needs and for reasons of equality, he can fix regulations between 2016 -2019, so that they will promote equality in the army of men and women. All this, with the approval of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense committee.

As required by the military, it also states that if the Minister of Defense does not establish regulations - the section will be canceled completely.

The heated discussion which took place was attended by MK Eitan Kabel, who attacked the committee's work in general and said: "The recruitment process in Haredi society exists despite the law. You do not have the courage to say that this whole process of legislation is unconstitutional. The law which will ultimately come out is one which polarizes and does not connect. "

After the discussion on extension of service for women section, which was a stumble block between the army and the committee members, concluded, there remained a number of individual votes to finish the work of the committee altogether. The remaining votes include a revision of criminal sanctions section.

As reported by Behadrey Haredim yesterday, during evening and the night a dispute erupted between the Jewish Home faction and Yesh Atid regarding the recruit law. As of now, the dispute remains, and so, apparently the revision of criminal sanctions did not go up for a vote in the Committee meetings held in the morning and it was postponed until tomorrow.

The dispute is over the question of economic sanctions during the transition period - until 2017, and in addition, in the last hours, a demand came from the Jewish Home to raise the age of exemption ('emptying the pool') to 24 and not 22 as the law is currently worded. After a long meeting held yesterday in the Knesset and slipped into the wee hours, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was requested to intervene, and he acts through Likud leaders to reach an agreement to be negotiated with Haredi MKs. As stated, in the meantime, the vote on the Article of sanctions is delayed, and the Knesset expects to see whether and when it will take place.
