Black Day in Kiev: killed, wounded and Molotov cocktails

Serious escalation in protest against the government in Ukraine • police trying to evict protesters were attacked with Molotov cocktails and stones • 18 killed

Many killed and wounded during the day (Tuesday) in Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, in clashes between security forces and opponents of President Viktor Yanukovych.

The riots broke out following the announcement by Russia to grant financial assistance amounting to two billion dollars to the Ukraine, in the framework of economic agreements, designed as a replacement for agreements with the EU.

With the outbreak of violence demonstrators centered in the Independence Square in central Kiev. Police came to disperse the demonstrators.

These hurled petrol bombs, fireworks and stones, and many police officers were injured.

In the shadow of the events, late in the evening opposition leader Vitaly Kilitzniko, arrived at a special meeting in the office of President Yanukovych, to bring calm.

The government announced in response to the riots that it would prevent the entry of vehicles to Kiev during the night, from midnight .

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the United States is shocked at the violence in Kiev, and called on the government to start negotiations with the protesters.

So too, the foreign minister of the EU, Catherine Ashton, said that she "condemns any kind of violence, and calls on the leadership to handle the situation."
