Yeshiva student drowned: shouted 'I have no strength' - and disappeared

A yeshiva student was pulled out tonight (Wednesday) lifeless from the water at the Beit Zait water reservoir in the Jerusalem corridor.

The 21 year old yeshiva student, of the Knesset Israel - Hevron Givat Mordechai, went with his friends for a hike at the water reservoir of Beit Zait, west of Jerusalem. The youngster went in with his friends to swim in the water and disappeared.

One of his friends said: "We went for a hike and walked some distance. When we started to come back, our friend went in to swim across the reservoir to the other side. In the middle he shouted that he ran out of strength, he found a hard swimming and suddenly disappeared from our view."

His friends called the rescue forces. Immediately upon receiving the call firefighters arrived and only special recoveries, the divers unit of ZAKA and MDA teams and United Hatzalah and began searching.

After a long search his body was found lifeless.

Rescue units from Beit Shemesh and from Jerusalem carried out search operations in the water, as well as a rescue unit was called from Judea and Samaria. Beit Shemesh command post also arrived, as well as the district commander. A Yasur helicopter assisted the forces of Unit 669. United Hatzala reported that the center received a call from Hevron Yeshiva - Givat Mordechai students, who said that during their stay in the dam, one of them disappeared, and asked for help.

Dvir Adani of Ichud Hatzala, said: "This is a harsh tragedy - when I got to the scene I encountered friends of the boy, they panicked after their comrade was gone when he drowned in the lake, rescue units and divers were called and were operating in the scene to locate the body, bystanders told that this is Yeshiva student who drowned in the mud after he was swimming in the lake, large police and fire forces were active on the scene."

MDA paramedic Felix Lotan, an expert in sea extracting who had located the body, was on shift in MDA and arrived in the Intensive Care Unit. He says: "We received a call on a number of young adults who swam in the water reservoir and one of their friends did not come out, when we arrived the youngsters were very upset and led us to the place. During the scans we performed, I asked the MDA team to go to my house which is close by and bring my scuba gear. I got ready to dive in minutes and immediately began searching underwater, after a few minutes I found the young man unconscious underwater, I pulled him to the surface where we could only confirm his death."

Jerusalem Police opened an investigation.
