Hgrmi"l: "they will not step in my home"
Exposure by Behadrey Haredim: 14 years ago factors in the Haredi community leaked information to the general press, in order to influence the recruitment and Tal Law • Hgrmi"l Lefkovitz, whom the leaks were supposedly designed to "help", acted harshly • "their goal is intrigue and degrading talmidei chachamim and impose controversy among youngsters" • more topical than ever

Yesterday (Monday) morning, the haredi public was surprised to find that the general media reported that Haredi community leaders are supposedly negotiating with the army regarding the recruiting of Haredim. Reports were based on recordings that originate in the home of Hagaon R' Aharon Leib Steinman, including his associates talking with Rosh Yeshiva of Or Israel Hagaon R' Yisrael Rosen.
As recalled, yesterday MK Yaakov Asher responded in an exclusive interview with Behadrey Haredim, that "this is a surreal group that aims to undermine and destroy the Torah world."
Is this a precedent that haredi public factors are trying to influence public opinion through approaching the general media and creating titles that serve a particular interest? A check by Behadrey Haredim revealed that this has happened in the past and there is nothing new under the sun.
The events that took place 14 years ago - in 5760, when the known storm broke out regarding the Law Tal, various factors tried to influence the campaign by creating general media headlines.
One member of the family of Hgrm"i Lefkowitz, who famously struggled all the time against the Tal Law, tells Behadrey Haredim how Hgrmi"l responded to general media publications.
"Although these people thought that they serve the purpose of Hgrmi"l zt"l, he ordered to keep them away from his home and sent his son to write a special letter to Hagaon R' Aharon Leib in which he clarified his position toward quarrelsome mongers - even if their purpose is supposedly for the sake of Heaven."
• What was the purpose of Hgrmi"l in sending the letter?
"It was important to Harav Lefkowitz to emphasize that despite differences of opinion on the matter, and though according to him it was something which one must be moser nefesh on, there are unacceptable ways that under no circumstances should be taken."
The letter reads: " I was asked by Aamo"r Hagaon shlit'a to bring to the attention of those people that Aamo"r shlit'a does not want them to have a foothold in his home after he heard and saw words of mockery which offend talmidei chachamim and whose goal is intrigue and degradation of talmidei chachamim, and impose controversy and division among the youngsters, and especially to challenge the status of Gedolei Yisroel. And regarding them it says "guru lachem etc." And one should stay away from their leaderships like one running away from the fire."
