Minister of Defense in Berlin: won't give in to international pressure

Defense Minister Moshe (Bugie) Ya'alon, who is currently in Germany on the occasion of a security conference in Munich, met the Rabbi of Chabad in Berlin, Rabbi Yehuda Teichtel last weekend. In the meeting between the two, the defense minister stressed that he intends to meet the principles of the State of Israel despite international pressure on it in recent months.

Rabbi Yehuda Teichtel told the minister that "the people of Israel are with you for your firm stand on the principles of the State of Israel." Rabbi Teichtel added that "when the people of the world see that the leaders of Israel are standing firm on their principles, finally, they respect it themselves, but when the behavior is opposite, the result is also the opposite."

The Rabbi also stressed to the defense minister the good relationship between the authorities and the Jewish community and Germany's friendship with Israel, as reflected in the talks between the leaders of the community and heads of the German government.

The two met at the end of the memorial ceremony held on platform 17 at the train station in Berlin, from which Jews were sent to concentration camps during World War II. At the ceremony, which was held on the occasion of the arrival of the Minister and in close proximity to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Rabbi Teichtel prayed in memory of the victims. The Defense Minister and his entourage lit memorial candles near the railroad tracks.
