R' Aharon Leib instructed: be stronger in maintaining Torah

Hagaon R' Aharon Leib Steinman was shocked when he heard of the disaster that struck the Gross family in Jerusalem, who lost two daughters • How did he react? • Why should one strengthen this particular issue? • Also: what 'suffering' did Hgri"i Galinsky zt"l have when collecting money for Torah and charity?

The terrible tragedy that struck the Gross family in Jerusalem, when two daughters were poisoned to death, reached the ears of Hagaon R' Aharon Leib Steinman, who was shocked and commented the following: "Berosh Hashanah yikasevun, uveyom Tzom Kippur yechasemun, how many will pass away and how many will be created, who will live and who will die, who at his predestined time and who before his time, who by sword, who by beast, etc.".

"It is impossible for us to know the calculations of Heaven, but these days are days of amending sins, as the Arizal said, during which midas hadin is very stringent, and one should awaken to do Tshuva.

"Indeed, to do tshuva correctly is not easy, and as written in Keter Rosh by Maran Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin ztk"l that the main point of tshuva de'oraisa is regret for the past and future acceptance, and it is very difficult to keep that in completeness."

Hagaon R' Aharon Leib was asked what should the public be strengthened with, and he noted the words of Rabbeinu Yonah in Aderet Hatshuva: "And one who wants to be saved from the bitter punishment this big sin [ this is the sin of Bitul Torah of which he at length beforehand], should take care of the needs of students and rabbis studying for heaven's sake, and will help with employing rabbis so that they should be in his city and will engage in Torah study through him, end of quote. And at this time it is everyone's obligation to do so according to his ability."

Meanwhile, prayers of thousands of Jews continue for the refuah sheleima of Raphael Yitzchak Eizik ben Michal and Haim Michael Shlomo ben Michal, soon betoch she'ar cholei Yisroel.

Further on R' Aharon Leib was updated about the demise of Hgri"i Galinsky, and said that the main suffering which atone for a person are "insults", and he gained plenty of insults being in this world, when he wandered overseas to raise money for holding Torah and charity, and suffered immensely of insults there. And though he was of the Novardok yeshiva and who worked on the trait of shame and absorbing insults, still insults are insults, and interfere with a person, and those are agony which atones.
