Hundreds of haredi men and politicians gathered at 3:00pm New York time - for a press conference gathered by the president of Brooklyn, Eric Adams, at his office in lower Brooklyn in protest against the anti-Semitic title chosen by the newspaper "New York Post" in order to review the murder of the benefactor Menachem Stark Hy"d.
According to Adams: "We live in the U.S., there are courts here. If someone owes something – they bring him to court. To make a newspaper headline - "Who did not want him dead" - is against democracy. There is no such concept of 'everyone wants to kill him.'"
Comptroller of New York, Litosa James asked city residents not to publish in the paper and not to buy it, and in short, to impose a consumer boycott.
David Greenfield, member of the City Council, asked that the newspaper apologize on the front page tomorrow to ask the forgiveness of the family, and apologize for the "nasty deed" as he defined it.
Activist Naftali Moshe Indig said at the press conference that they did not only kill a single person - but the said title killed his family, his wife, his children and the entire Orthodox community in New York and the world.
Jewish activist Yehudah Perlstein asked the owners of the newspaper, who wrote that that there are not enough investigators to interrogate the hundreds of those lurking to kill him, to donate one day of the newspaper's staff, to investigate the identity of the murderers .
Activist Avraham Yaakov Friedman, who gave the family the terrible news, said that the reporter had to be at the deceased's home at the time of the announcement, and then he could understand the magnitude of the injustice done by him.
Thereafter, one of the people who lives in a rented apartment of Menachem Stark spoke. He explained that it is clear that a person holding about 1,000 appartments for rent has some renters who hate him, and of course that does not justify murder, but 95% of the tenants loved him very much. "He was an honest and good hearted man, who did not throw out tenants who did not pay so fast," he stressed.
At the end of the press conference the speakers were activist Moshe David Niderman, City Council member Staya Levin, Rabbi Aharon Ben-Zion Wieder Alderman of Monsey and Hanina Sperlin of Crown Heights.Activists declared boycott and spokeswoman of newspaper apologizes
Among the business owners which were contacted by the activists are also Macy's network - which has branches throughout New York and New Jersey, a bus company, real estate companies and more.
Gas stations which handed out the newspaper for free at refueling, advertised that the newspaper distribution was discontinued and replaced by another newspaper.
The action committee of local activists published the phone numbers of the newspaper, and called on the public to protest the hideous news item. The phone number published is 212-930-8000, and according to a senior employee in the press the switchboard collapsed due to the load of phone calls, and the same time the e-mail address was filled with letters of protest against the paper.
Dozens of business owners at Haredi neighborhoods announced to the marketing manager of the paper on the cessation of sales at newsstands.
Meanwhile, the newspaper's spokeswoman, Susanne Halpin released tonight a 'mini- clarification', stating: "The Post did not state that Mr. Stark deserved death, but our investigation showed that Stark had many enemies that led to the tragic murder. Our thoughts and our prayers are with the bereaved family".
