U.S. Intelligence rented an apartment overlooking Akirov Towers where the former Defense Minister Ehud Barak lived, as Yediot Aharonot reported.
According to the report, in June 2007, shortly after the appointment of Ehud Barak as defense minister, the Americans rented an apartment on Pinkas Street in Tel Aviv, directly overlooking the window of Barak in Akirov Towers.
Israel was suspicious about the issue, but the Americans explained that there is no connection between the events, although Israel observed a large amount of electronic equipment which entered the apartment.
As revealed in the New York Times, "New documents presented by the U.S. intelligence fugitive Edward Snowden, show that the National Security Agency of the United States - NSA - followed the correspondence of the Israeli prime minister and defense minister, at the time that in the Prime Minister's Office were Ehud Olmert and Binyamin Netanyahu and the role of Defense Minister was manned by Barak.
Americans also followed the mail correspondence of the Israeli Embassy in Nigeria and Kenya.
Following the publication, a diplomatic source in Jerusalem said that the United States lost its legitimacy to imprison Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard. "If the Snowden affair manages to shock something in the American hypocrisy wall that holds Pollard there - maybe this will be a useful publication," he said.
