Bolivian government turned today (Wednesday) to the U.S. with the demand to extradite Jacob Ostreicher, Haredi businessman who had escaped from Bolivia.
The cover story of the escape was that Ostreicher was kidnapped to neighboring country Peru from Bolivia. There he managed to return to the United States.
The family of fugitive said that since last Friday lost contact with him. Anonymous on Sunday called Ostreicher's brother and informed of the kidnapping and ransom request. According to a family member, Aaron Ostreicher, agreed that the kidnappers would release him on the West Coast.
But activists involved in the release saying that this is a cover story, and that he has been in hiding in Los Angeles.
A source close to the family said that administration officials in Bolivia knew about Ostreicher's plan and helped him. The same source added that the U.S. Department was also in contact with officials in Bolivia before the abduction.
Bolivia's Foreign Minister Cecilia Alion said today at a press conference that the assumption is that senior officials in Bolivia helped smuggle Ostreicher out of Bolivia for fear that he would incriminate them, and anyway she does not know for sure if the U.S. Department was involved.
She says Ostreicher illegally entered Peru and on Monday boarded a plane to the U.S.
