Singles of Toldos Avrohom Yitzchok light candles

Unprecedented in Toldos Avrohom Yitzchok: singles and divorced honored by lighting the menorah in the Beis Midrash – as a segulah • Who chooses those who light?

Precedent at the Toldos Avrohom Yitzchok Hassidus: single men or divorced avreichim who have difficulty finding a match, are honored by the Rebbe to light the candles in the Beis Midrash, as is customary, before ma'ariv, as a segulah for a shidduch and finding a match soon.

In the past it was customary that one of the elders of the community, lit the Chanuka candles daily as explained in Halacha, before saying borchu of ma'ariv. Until two years ago, the chazoka was retained by R' Yaakov Yitzhok Einhorn z"l who would light the candles each night of Hanukkah. After his death, another Jew of the notables in that community was honored with lighting.

The Rebbe surprised this year stating that the custom to light the candles in the Beis Midrash will not be performed by the gabbai nor any other notable, but those who have not yet been married, or broke up their marriage and they are facing a new chapter in their lives. Every day, the Rebbe orders someone else to perform the lighting.

Because all in all there are eight days and many push and come before the Rebbe as to merit them with the Mitzvah and segulah, the priority obviously is given to the elders of the crowd, with the kibbud provided directly according to orders of the Rebbe.
